- Raise terracotta planters onto feet during the Winter to improve drainage and prevent from cracking.
- Only use clean, sharp tools for pruning. A clean, even cut is less susceptible to disease and rot.
- Dig over borders and vegetable plots (when conditions allow) and let the birds remove pests over wintering in the soil.
- Float a tennis ball on the pond (or break ice) to provide a breathe hole for fish when iced over for long periods.
- Place boards on the lawn if you are wheeling heavy barrow loads to prevent damage through creating ruts.
- During periods of heavy frost, wait till it has thawed away before walking on grass areas.
- Greenhouses should be well ventilated to prevent the possibility of disease such as botrytis.
- Collect leaves when they are dry. It's much easier!
- Clip hedges to an 'A' shape to allow light to the base growth and reduce the damage caused by snow.
- Move houseplants away from windowsills during very cold spells.
