Here are the top 10 Tips selected by our Tony the GoneGardening.com gardener. Why not try them out for yourself?
- Always wear gloves when putting your hands into the soil, especially in areas where there are cats!
- Do not water Gladioli til the end of April when the secondary roots will have developed.
- Position supports now for tall growing plants to prevent stems flopping over.
- Harden off bedding plants outside during the daytime but bring back into a glasshouse or similar at night.
- Mulch around weed-free beds and borders when the soil is warm and moist.
- Dead head bulbs which have finished flowering to prevent seed development and wasted energy.
- Protect buds of soft fruit and wall trees from frost with fleece.
Only use clean, sharp tools for pruning. A clean, even cut is less susceptible to disease and rot.
- Dig over borders and vegetable plots (when conditions allow) and let the birds remove pests over wintering in the soil.
- Greenhouses should be well ventilated to prevent the possibility of disease such as botrytis.
